Indianapolis 500 (Forever®) Stamp

That's right, stamps and motorsports.

On May 30, 2011, the Greatest Spectacle in Motorsports, the Indy 500, celebrated it's 100th anniversary. To honor the occasion, the United States Postal Service has issued a commemorative Forever® stamp. It pays tribute to the Ray Harroun, who drove #32 Marmon Wasp to victory lane in the very first Indy 500 on May 30, 1911.

Find more details and purchase these stamps at the USPS website.

Chalk Talk with Steve Matchett

Unfortunately, SpeedTV doesn't allow their video content to be embedded on blogs like this. If they did, however, we'd definitely post every episode of Chalk Talk. Featuring former Formula 1 mechanic, Steve Matchett (who worked on the Michael Schumacher-era Benetton team for many years), Chalk Talk brings a little technical data to supplement the F1 race calendar.

Above is a screenshot illustrating Matchett's explanation of camber and it's effect on tire degradation during his Chalk Talk Italian GP segment. And we highly recommend watching the back episodes of Chalk Talk; Matchett tells great stories and his technical insight really helps to round out the Formula 1 experience for fans.

Ted Longshaw Tribute

Founder of the BRCA and IFMAR, Ted Longshaw, recently passed away. Fueled by a genuine passion for the hobby, Longshaw worked tirelessly over decades to form organized, international RC racing.

Thanks to Nick Daman of RCRacingTV for putting together the above tribute piece.

RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF x Tsukuba Circuit

Another beautiful piece by Luke Huxham, capturing some of the amazing visuals that encompass motorsport competition. The above episode features an afternoon with Nakai-San of Rauh-Welt Begriff at the Tsukuba Circuit.

Schuberth's 'Golden Twenties' for Schumacher

If you have deep pockets (or a Costanza-sized wallet, teeming with Euros), you can purchase this 1:1 replica of Michael Schumacher's 'Golden Twenties' helmet as designed and manufactured by Schuberth. Senna Interviewed by Sir Jackie Stewart

Obviously, we're on a little Senna bender here on the blog posts, but that's because the Senna documentary left such an impression upon us. Above is a very memorable interview with Aryton Senna conducted by Sir Jackie Stewart who asks a tough question, but is countered by an even tougher answer.

Senna Top Gear Tribute

Last weekend, we hit the local 'art house' theater to see the feature length doc on Aryton Senna, titled Senna. It was a captivating story and very well-crafted film. (Seeing Formula 1 footage at that scale projected onto the silver screen, was an amazing experience in and of itself...) We highly recommend the film to all you gearheads, racers, F1 fans, and motorsport junkies out there.

If you're not familiar with the influence and patriotic impact that Aryton Senna had upon the sport and his country, the folks at Top Gear (above) put together a fitting tribute; it's a good place to start.

Rollins Tees Off (RE: Car Commercials) NSFW

We're big fans of Henry Rollins and here is an example of why...listen to his brilliant, editorial rant on underground bands and heroes, such Iggy Pop, that license their music in car commercials.

Of course, the fact that Rollins is now the voice of Infiniti, makes his above editorial all the more enjoyable. And justified.

Big fans...still.

Red Bull Racing at Circuit of the Americas

We know what it's like to feel anxious about getting those first few laps on a brand new layout, whether it's walking the course of SCCA Solo II layout or hitting the triple on a freshly-packed offroad track.

However, we were very surprised (and mildly amused) to see that the pinnacle of motorsport competition, Formula 1, aren't immune to that itch, either. Red Bull Racing released the above video this week, featuring David Coulthard attempting to hustle around the still-unpaved (!?) Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

We wonder if they raised the ride height a bit before pulling out of the paddock...

P1 Brand Grid Stencils: Start/Finish Line

As part of our upcoming line of Trackwares products we are designing, developing and releasing soon via the P1 Brand online store, above is a sneak peek at one of our Grid Stencils.

P1 Brand Grid Stencils are custom-cut stencils that can be used (and reused) by local racing clubs and track owners to clearly identify the all important starting grid or, as shown above, the all-important Start/Finish Line (often marking the location of the digital timing loop).

If you're a regular racer at West Coast Raceway, you can see pre-production versions of the P1 Brand Grid Stencils currently in use on the back straight of the offroad track.

DC x Ken Block x Gymkhana FOUR Released

As promised, the DC x Ken Block x Gymkhana FOUR video was released earlier this week on You Tube. In contrast to the Gymkhana Three video, Four shifts it's focus from 'pure' driving to a parody of cliched, tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top-Hollywood-summer-infomercial-blockbuster.

And while we much-preferred the relatively quiet spectacle of Gymkhana Three, Gymkhana Four has already logged more than 2.5 million views in only a few days, proving that motorsport as entertainment can be an effective marketing tool.

DC x Ken Block x Gymkhana FOUR

Set to debut on August 16, 2011, the DC Shoes x Ken Block x Gymkhana Four project has released the above teaser shot from the upcoming video. It will be interesting to see if Block can top the viral phenomenon achieved by his Gymkhana Three video, logging more than 30 million views since it's release ten months ago...

Say what you will about Block's actual driving skills (his 2011 WRC participation has been plagued with DNS's, DNF's and just plain off the pace), his ability to present and promote motorsport to a new audience is highly-effective and undisputed.

Above teaser photo from Block's Facebook page.

Ken Block's New Hybrid Function Car

Over on the Monster World Rally Team website, and on the cusp of Rally Car Events at the Summer X Games 17 this weekend....

Ken Block revealed his newest weapon—a multi-purpose race car, built specifically to compete in stage rally, rallycross and gymkhana events—this past weekend at the Gymkhana World Tour in Los Angeles, California. The Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle (H.F.H.V.), or just ‘Hybrid’ as it has been dubbed, gets its name not from its method of propulsion, but instead from its ability to transform and race at the highest level for each of these motorsport disciplines, making it one of the most unique and versatile competition vehicles ever built.

“Many people may not realize this, but despite the fundamental similarities between stage rally, rallycross and gymkhana, in order to be the best at each, you must have specific built vehicles,” says Block. “My WRC Fiesta just can’t do what my Gymkhana Fiesta can, and vice versa. But having to campaign three separate cars is a nightmare, so we built one car that can be transformed to suit each form of racing I do on the highest level.”

The chassis of the H.F.H.V. is based on M-Sport’s current 2011 Ford Fiesta RS WRC car, but in order to achieve the power outputs required for both rallycross and gymkhana, the 1.6L engine has been replaced with a Pipo Moteurs-built 2.0L, inline-four cylinder. This mill is based off the power plant found previously in the Ford Focus RS WRC car, a motor that has over 10 years of development. The result is a massive 600hp and 665 ft. lbs. of torque when using the 45mm restrictor required by the Global Rally Cross series. While the 2.0l engine makes the H.F.H.V. ineligible for WRC competition, the addition of a 34mm restrictor will allow the car to compete in the Rally America series. Engine management is handled by Cosworth Electronics.

Mated to the Ford EcoBoost motor is a custom AWD system designed by Sadev. The drivetrain features a 6-speed Sadev sequential transmission and three adjustable Sadev mechanical differentials. Different gear ratios are used for each of the Hybrid’s three modes. To handle the varying surface conditions, specific Reiger suspension set-ups have been developed for each of the three modes.

“The H.F.H.V. is the best of all worlds for me,” says Block. “The current WRC Fiesta is the greatest handling car I have driven, but it lacks the sheer grunt that the 2.0L engine in the WRC Focus created. The H.F.H.V. brings those two things together, and the result is a manic beast that is just too much fun to drive.”

The transformations from each of the modes range from half a day, to a whole day’s work. The rallycross and gymkhana set-ups are the most similar, but each discipline still requires different gear ratios, entirely different suspension settings, as well as a different wheel and tire combo in addition to engine mapping adjustments. The conversion to stage rally, however, is even more involved, including an entire relocation of the cooling system from back to front, a smaller brake set-up, the addition of a Recaro Ultima seat for a co-driver, a smaller turbo and items such as functional headlights to replace the faux lamps to make the H.F.H.V. road worthy.

The H.F.H.V. was a collaborative project between the Monster World Rally Team and a assortment of some of the world’s top technical partners.

Ken Block will race the H.F.H.V. at Summer X Games 17, taking place in Los Angeles, California, July 30th and 31st.

And since we worked with Ken Block and DC Shoes back in January of this year, we've become fans of Block's hustle. If you live in the Los Angeles area, get out and support the 4 wheeled motorsport action presented by the Summer X Games 17.

LA Carmageddeon "Running on Empty"

The media-hyped Carmageddeon (a temporary closure of the 405 highway) happend in LA a few weeks ago. Much to everyone's surprise, the surrounding highways (the 101, 5, 10, 110) were completely traffic-free. It seems as if the road-clogging public actually heeded the CalTrans advice to stay off the streets, and it worked...it was quite surreal, almost like the short film above by Ross Ching.

D*Face Pool Paint Attack

On the subject of drawing lines, English artist D*Face recently teamed up with a few skateboarders, including Screaming Lord Salba, to transform an ordinary backyard pool into a curved canvas of cured concrete. Using some aerosol paint, a remotely-operated trigger and some ingenuity, each board was modified into a kinetic paint brush. The result? A three dimensional, Spirograph-esque collaboration between the artist, the skaters and the pool...

Pirelli x Ken Block x F1 Test Session

A bit of interesting news from last week as Formula 1 tire supplier, Pirelli, announced that they will be hosting an official Formula 1 test session with WRC driver and DC Shoes Co-Founder, Ken Block, in August 2011.

Considering all of the viral success that DC Shoes, Ken Block and his Gymkhana video series has had the past few years, the potential for Block to find a seat on a Formula 1 team would bring lots of new fans into the sport.

Hopefully, we'll get a chance to speak directly with Block again later this summer, as X Games 17 and it's Rally Cross event hits the streets of Los Angeles on July 28-30.

The Road to 200 MPH / Nic Case & Team Associated

Two years ago, we posted an entry on Nic Case and his 2009 speed record.

Today, Case continues his quest to build and drive the world's fastest RC car, with help from Team Associated and many others. Case recently ran a few test runs in Bakersfield, CA.

Some of the specs: electric power; ten pound car, with ten horsepower (1:1 HP/weight ratio!!??); three-inch diameter foam tires, spinning at 28,000 rpm; and like full-sized F1, an aesthetic that blends a bit of aircraft tech to keep the car planted into the tarmac.

There is no doubt, with assistance from the resources at Team Associated, including Cliff Lett and Curtis Husting, that Case will achieve the 200 mph target soon.

Godspeed!

CHARGE: Zero Emissions/Maximum Speed

Filmmaker Mark Neale has created a new film, Charge, that documents the process of building/racing zero-emissions, electric Moto GPs at the Isle of Man TT. Narrated by Ewan MacGregor.

Beautiful stuff.

Neale writes:

The movie follows several teams to the world's first zero-emissions grand prix on the Isle of Man in 2009 and on their return in 2010.

For the visionaries, this is history. For the petrol-heads its blasphemy. What is racing without the sound and fury of internal combustion engines?

CHARGE is about the future. It's about change. It's about the dream of a clean, green world. It's about the dream of winning.

CHARGE is proof that maniacs on motorcycles can be a force for global good.

Boys of Bonneville

From the Price Museum of Speed comes this great trailer for Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt. Beautiful footage of beautiful machines from the earliest days of speed runs: Ab Jenkins, the Mormon Meteor.

“Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt” reveals an unsung hero and self-made man who pioneered the Bonneville Salt Flats as the Fastest Place on Earth. More than a century later, many of Ab’s speed and endurance records remain unbroken and the legacy lives on in his custom-built racing car. Looking like something Batman would have owned, the story comes full circle when Ab’s son Marv restores the 12-cylinder, 4800-pound “Mormon Meteor” to its original glory for ceremonial laps on the salt. Featuring Patrick Dempsey as the voice of Ab Jenkins, and interviews with Jay Leno and Col. Andy Green, current land speed record holder.

Sagmeister for BMW CULTURE

Stefan Sagmeister is easily one of the most interesting and conceptual designers working today. Thankfully, BMW is aware of this and recently commissioned him to create the limited edition CULTURE monograph.

The internationally celebrated graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister has created the design of the publication CULTURE, a book describing the BMW Group's international cultural commitment. The limited edition of 1488 hand-signed copies, which are not available for sale, is based on an unconventional concept: CULTURE also features an integrated, remote-controlled car, a book that can be driven around. As a whole, the numerical arrangement of all book covers would make a square measuring 7 x 7 metres depicting a graphically abstracted image of the legendary BMW "four cylinder" building - the company headquarters in Munich built by Karl Schwanzer in 1972 - from a bird's eye view. Consequently, each book cover becomes a fragmented, unique specimen.

Notice the parting shot as the book suspiciously rolls away under it's own power....

Volvo Art Session

Although not as interesting as the tradition of BMW Art Cars, Volvo has created their own marketing initiative to showcase artists' creativity.

Volvo Cars Switzerland presents: the final Volvo Art Session film. 10 street artists spent 5 days repeatedly painting, spraying and designing a snow-white Volvo S60 against a white background. A high-end camera shot an image of the vehicle and the background every ten seconds. Now, after extensive post-production, the final Volvo S60 Art Session timelaps clip is finally premiered.

Robo-Rainbow/Arkay

It's not too often that one sees radio control tech mixed with 'vandalism', but such is the case with the Stockholm-based artist, Arkay. We stumbled upon this above short, displaying his A-Team-meets-Futura 2000 contraption, this week via Animal New York. It appears that his handlebar-mounted, two channel transmitter operates a couple of servos that actuate both the swing arm and the can nozzles...

Great stuff.

Traxxas x Ken Block x Gymkhana Fiesta

Congratulations to Traxxas for recognizing an opportunity to once again crossover into a new market thru licensing and co-branding. Their new, signature Traxxas/Ken Block/Gymhana Fiesta is a 1/16th scale, electric-powered, ready-to-run, radio controlled car.

In 2009, Traxxas successfully brought the appeal of full scale, Short Course Racing Trucks into RC with the creation of their Slash, and in turn, spawned a whole new category of RC racing.

Aimed at making the excitement of full scale Gymkhana accessible to motorsport enthusiasts, this product faithfully reproduces Block's signature livery, right down to the 'Hoonigan' detail on the driver's side window. It also features the Ken Block x Huck Gee graphic which were cohesively carried over from all of the related DC product collection.

Considering the viral success of the DC x Ken Block x Gymkhana 3.0 video, we're hoping that this will be the product that attracts new racers to the local track.

DC's Ken Block and his Gymkhana Three video (above) recently surpassed the 23 million view mark on YouTube, and for good reason. It presents some of the amazing sound, sight and sideways style of the Gymkhana motorsport. Directed and Produced by the Martelli Brothers/Mad Media.

Speaking of Gymkhana Three, and as we mentioned on Twitter late last week, P1 Brand just wrapped a small project for DC and Ken Block. It was a fun and exciting project for us and we're looking forward to sharing it here very soon.

Stay tuned for more info...
